Department of Disability Empowerment of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India has been launched 'Sugamya Bharat App' to ease accessibilty issues faced by differently-abled in buildings, transport system.
The Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan is a nationwide campaign launched by the Department of Disability Empowerment of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to provide universal access to persons with disabilities .
The objective of the campaign is to provide equal opportunities and self-reliant lives to people with disabilities to participate in all walks of life. The Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan focuses on developing an accessible physical environment, transport, information and communication ecosystem.
With a firm commitment to the socio-economic change of persons with disabilities, the Government of India is making efforts to create mass awareness for universal access.
India is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Article 9 of the United Nations Convention imposes on the signatory governments the responsibility to take all necessary steps to enable individuals with disabilities access the same physical environment, transport, information and communication (including technologies and systems) as others, and the public in urban or rural areas Other facilities and services being provided can be ensured.
All states are required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities (Equal Opportunity Rights Protection and Full Participation) Act, 1995 , under sections 44, 45 and 46 of which there is a clear non-discrimination in transportation, roads and the built environment.
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities through Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan aims to develop an inclusive society in which persons with disabilities are provided equal opportunities and access to progress and development.
